The Children
The children of Cambodia's impoverished must earn money to help feed their family.  Cambodia's
impoverished send their children to scour city streets.  Children of all ages wander barefoot
looking for cans and bottles.
The family makes a difficult investment:  For
impoverished children to attend school just
one hour each day diminishes the time
available to earn money.

One hour in school means the family has
less to eat.  Education is a difficult
investment for the family.

Education today:  The middle class citizens
send their children to public schools.
Unlike Western schools, public schools in
Cambodia are not free. Students in public
school must pay a daily fee to attend. The
impoverished and many middle class
families cannot afford to send their
children to public school. Consequently,
thousands of children have no opportunity
(aogaah) to learn reading, writing and
simple mathematics.
For the impoverished, the prospects for meaningful employment are bleak. The need is
overwhelming.  Aogaah Foundation is working to meet this need. See the page
The Schools for
additional information.

The Cambodian population:  Over half of Cambodia's population of twelve million is under the age of
30.  Eighty percent of the population survive on less than one dollar a day.  Only seven percent have
completed primary school and only three percent have completed high school.
