Public and Private Schools
All education in Cambodia is administered by the Ministry of
Education, Youth and Sport.
The Education System is a three tiered system:
1) Private Education
2) Public Education
3) Non-Formal Education
Wealthy Cambodians send there children to Private Schools.
The schools charge high tuitions and hire a large staff, many of
whom have been trained in Western countries.
The middle class citizens send their children to public schools.
Unlike Western schools, public schools in Cambodia are not
free. Students in public school must pay a daily fee to attend.
The impoverished and many middle class families cannot afford
to send their children to public school.
Consequently, thousands of children have no opportunity
(aogaah) to go to school. The impoverished are all but
guaranteed to remain impoverished.
There are a handful of 'Community Schools' which are a part of
the Non-Formal Education tier of the Education System. Some of
these Community Schools offer free classes. These schools are
not 'college prep' institutions. A goal of Community Schools is to
teach the students to read, write and perform simple
mathematical calculations in hopes these children may someday
find meaningful employment.
Aogaah Foundation® is apart of the Non-Formal Education
system. Impoverished vulnerable Cambodian children attend
Aogaah's community schools are free.
