Cambodia, the forgotten Democracy
Recently, I had been speaking and traveling
in Singapore and took the opportunity to
visit Cambodia, The Kingdom of Wonder. I
visited Angkor, one of the most important
ancient urban cities which at one time had a
population of over one million people
spread out through a large region. In
Phnom Penh, I visited a Genocide Museum
and the Killing Fields.
The connection that I established with
Cambodia began with meeting Richard (Rick)
Meyer, a retired math instructor of Mesa
Community College, where I am Senior
Advisor for the Center for Teaching and
Learning. The purpose for my Cambodia trip
was to visit a small grade school which Rick
has established. I sat through several days
of classroom instruction at this little school.

Naryla, Teacher Navy and Dr. Elsner. (front row) Students from the
3rd grade class.
Cambodia, and Rick's school, have had a special impact on me and will continue to do so. I have
donated financially and have attempted and continue to attempt to raise money for this endeavor
that serves two of the poorest neighborhoods in the world, competing with Calcutta or any other
impoverished city worldwide.
A Summary of my Reflections:
I have been to Cambodia; I have seen both the wonders and the horrors of the Khmer past.
12 million people live on less than one US dollar per day and over half are under the age of
30. Only 7 percent of the population have finished primary school and only 3 percent have
finished high school. In Cambodia, the need for educational opportunity (aogaah) is
overwhelming.
In Cambodia, I have visited both public and private educational institutions ranging from
Kindergarten through the 4 year and the graduate level university system.
I have been exposed to the educational needs of Cambodia’s impoverished.
In Phnom Penh, I have spent time at an Aogaah Foundation® school and gained insight into the
Foundation’s program through personal observation.
I have sat in on the Foundation’s primary school classes and find the teaching staff to be
sincere, dedicated, hard working and well directed.
I have examined the official charters of both Aogaah Foundation® (American 501(c)3 non-profit
corporation) and Aogaah Foundation Cambodia (Cambodian Non Governmental Organization -
NGO). I support the mission and goals of both organizations.
Rick and the Foundation hope to establish schools throughout Cambodia. Rick has created a
teacher training center in Phnom Penh. But to open additional schools will require donations.
The budget for a school can be seen at www.aogaah.org.
I feel confident that all money donated to Aogaah Foundation® goes directly for classroom
instruction. Donations can be made directly on Aogaah's web site or mailed to the Arizona
(USA) address provided on the site.
I will be returning to Cambodia in the near future. You can not help but fall in love with the
children and their passion for education.
